EA Sports FC 27 — the game a lot of us still reflexively call FIFA 27 — launches worldwide on September 25, 2026, with Early Access from September 18 for Ultimate and Ultimate Plus buyers. Those two dates are locked, EA has confirmed the full platform list, and the closed beta is running right now.
What follows is everything on the record: dates, editions, every platform, the three gameplay changes, the new social hub, and the two licensing additions that say more about EA’s strategy than the marketing does. Where something is still unconfirmed, it’s flagged as such rather than smoothed over.
Confirmed: Worldwide launch September 25, 2026. Early Access September 18 with the Ultimate and Ultimate Plus editions. FC 27 Lite, a free limited preview, arrives on launch day at 16:00 UTC. Kylian Mbappé fronts the Standard cover; Jude Bellingham joins him on Ultimate Plus.
EA FC 27 release date and editions
Three editions, and the only functional difference that matters is when you get to play.
| Edition | Playable from | Cover | Worth it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | September 25 | Mbappé | Anyone not chasing the early Ultimate Team market |
| Ultimate | September 18 | Mbappé | Seven days of early access |
| Ultimate Plus | September 18 | Mbappé + Bellingham | Same early access, extra content bundle |
| FC 27 Lite (free) | September 25, 16:00 UTC | — | Trying selected modes without paying |
The seven-day head start is the entire pitch for the paid tiers, and whether it’s worth the premium depends almost entirely on whether you play Ultimate Team seriously. Getting into the market a week early is a genuine economic advantage — you’re trading into a thin, high-priced market before the player base floods it. If you mostly play Career Mode or Clubs, you are paying extra for the privilege of starting a single-player save slightly sooner.
Every confirmed platform
EA has now published the full list, which settles a question that was genuinely open earlier in the cycle:
- PlayStation — PS4 and PS5
- Xbox — Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
- Nintendo — Switch and Switch 2
- PC — EA app, Steam and the Epic Games Store
The last-gen inclusion is the notable part. PS4 and Xbox One are three console generations deep into their afterlife at this point, and their continued presence tells you EA still sees meaningful revenue there. It also caps what the game can do technically — a title that has to run on 2013 hardware is not a title being rebuilt from the ground up.
The Grounds isn’t a new menu, it’s a bid for your idle time

Strip the marketing gloss and The Grounds is EA trying to build a place you hang around in, not a mode you boot for one fixture and quit. You make an avatar, drop into Kickabouts, run 1v1s, play Clubs matches and share a space with other players.
If that structure sounds familiar, it should. It’s the persistent-hub pattern live-service games outside football have leaned on for a decade, and it’s the clearest signal yet that EA wants FC to behave like a platform rather than an annual release. EA has named it as one of the four things it most wants tested in the closed beta, which tells you how central it is to the pitch.
The obvious worry is cannibalisation. My read is that it complements more than it competes — Ultimate Team is a card economy, Career Mode is a single-player fantasy, and a social layer can sit on top of both without directly overlapping either. The real risk isn’t that The Grounds steals players from those modes. It’s that it splits EA’s development attention three ways, and Career Mode has historically been the mode that gets shortchanged when something shinier turns up. That’s a real concern this year specifically, because Career Mode is also getting its biggest rebuild in years.
Dynamic corners, smarter runs, manual marking
Three gameplay changes, and they pull in the same direction: more manual control, less assistance.
- Dynamic corners — set-piece routines that adapt as the defence sets up, rewarding players who read the box instead of spamming the same near-post delivery.
- Enhanced attacking awareness — off-ball runs that stay responsive to space and defensive shape.
- Player-focused defending — tighter, more granular control over who marks whom.
Manual defending is a skill-gap generator. Veterans who have been asking for more control will love it; newcomers will find the added responsibility punishing before it starts paying off. Taken together this is a competitive player’s patch philosophy, and it usually widens the gap between people who put in the reps and people who don’t.
If you are coming off FC 26, expect your defensive muscle memory to need retuning — and note that EA spent that game’s final title updates patching Ultimate Team stability rather than touching defending, so the change lands cold.
Liga MX and the AFC Asian Cup are a regional strategy, not a checklist
The licensing news is easy to skim past, and it tells you more about EA’s next five years than the gameplay notes do.
Liga MX returns for the first time since FIFA 22, and debuts under the EA Sports FC banner. That is a direct play for the Mexican and wider North American Spanish-speaking audience — one of football gaming’s most passionate and, across recent editions, most underserved markets.
The official 2027 AFC Asian Cup licence is the same logic aimed at Asia: lock the continental tournament, fold it in, and give an enormous regional player base a reason to care that is rooted in their own football rather than Europe’s.
Neither moves the needle on core gameplay. Both matter enormously for retention in markets EA cannot win on the Premier League alone. And unlike gameplay features, licences don’t get patched away — they compound edition over edition, which is why I’d expect more of this, not less.
How to play FC 27 before launch
Two routes, and only one of them is buyable.
The FC 27 Closed Beta is running now, August 5–25. It’s invite-only, there is no signup page anywhere, and EA emails codes to accounts it selects itself. The Grounds, Ultimate Team, Career Mode and Clubs are all in the build. Progress is wiped at the end and streaming it is prohibited.
Early Access on September 18 is the paid route, included with Ultimate and Ultimate Plus. Progress there is permanent and carries into the full game.
If you are trying to decide whether to pre-order, the last week of August is the better-informed moment. Information leaks out of closed betas regardless of the streaming ban, so by then there will be real impressions of the defending changes and The Grounds circulating — which is more than anyone has today.
Where this lands
The Grounds will get the launch spotlight and a wave of curiosity. Its long-term success hinges entirely on whether EA gives it real reasons to return — rewards, progression, events — rather than letting it settle into a pretty lobby people walk through on the way to something else. Persistent hubs die quietly when there’s nothing in them.
The gameplay changes will reward grinders and frustrate casuals for the first month, then level out as everyone recalibrates. That’s the normal shape of a manual-control patch.
The licensing additions will quietly turn out to be the most durable wins on this list, for the boring reason that leagues and tournaments don’t get nerfed. And the last-gen platform support is the quiet ceiling on all of it: this is an iteration, not a reinvention. If EA is genuinely steering FC toward a social-first, always-on shape, FC 27 is where that thesis gets its first real stress test — on hardware from 2013.
FAQ
When is EA Sports FC 27 released?
September 25, 2026 worldwide. Early Access opens September 18 for Ultimate and Ultimate Plus editions, and the free FC 27 Lite preview also arrives on September 25 at 16:00 UTC.
Is FIFA 27 the same game as EA Sports FC 27?
Yes. EA lost the FIFA brand licence after FIFA 23 and renamed the series EA Sports FC. There is no separate FIFA 27 — the searches point at the same game.
What platforms is EA FC 27 on?
PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC via the EA app, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
What is The Grounds in FC 27?
A persistent social hub where you create an avatar and play Kickabouts, 1v1s and Clubs matches in a shared space, rather than queueing into a match from a menu. It’s one of the four areas EA has asked closed beta testers to focus feedback on.
Is Early Access worth it?
Mostly if you play Ultimate Team seriously — seven days of trading into a thin early market is a genuine economic edge. For Career Mode or Clubs players it just means starting sooner.
Can I play FC 27 before Early Access?
Only through the closed beta running August 5–25, which is invite-only with no public signup and cannot be bought. Early Access on September 18 is the only paid route to playing before launch.
